Shopify vs WooCommerce in 2026: the honest comparison

A cost and capability comparison across five years, including the fees nobody mentions and the point where each one becomes the wrong choice.

Long-form copy being drafted
The short version
  • Shopify costs more monthly but less in maintenance time. WooCommerce is cheaper to run and more expensive to maintain.
  • Over five years at moderate volume the total cost is closer than either camp admits — the difference is where the cost lands.
  • Shopify’s transaction fee only bites if you do not use Shopify Payments; if you can, it disappears.
  • Choose WooCommerce if you already run WordPress and have developer access. Choose Shopify if you do not.

The comparison everyone gets wrong

Most comparisons list features. Both platforms have every feature you need — that has been true for years. The real difference is where your costs land and who has to deal with problems.

Shopify converts money into simplicity. WooCommerce converts time into savings. Which is better depends entirely on whether your time or your money is scarcer.

Real five-year cost, moderate volume

Shopify: $79/month on the Shopify plan, roughly $40/month in apps, $300 one-off theme, plus payment processing at 2.9% + 30¢. At $200,000 annual revenue that is about $4,700 a year all in, or $23,500 over five years.

WooCommerce: $180/year hosting that can handle real traffic, $200 in premium plugins annually, $300 theme, plus the same payment processing through Stripe. About $700 a year, or $3,500 over five years.

That looks decisive until you add maintenance. WooCommerce needs updating, breaks occasionally, and someone has to fix it. Budget four hours a month at whatever your time is worth. At $50/hour that is $12,000 over five years and the gap closes to almost nothing.

Where Shopify is clearly right

You do not have technical people and do not want any. Something breaks at 2am and Shopify’s problem is Shopify’s problem.

You are selling in multiple currencies and countries. Shopify Markets handles tax, currency and duty in a way that takes three plugins and a lot of swearing on WooCommerce.

You want to launch in two weeks. Shopify wins on speed to market, every time.

Where WooCommerce is clearly right

You already run WordPress and have a content operation on it. Keeping the store and the blog in one system is a real advantage for internal linking and SEO.

You need unusual product logic — complex variations, custom pricing rules, B2B tiered pricing, or anything Shopify’s data model resists.

You are at high volume and the 2.9% processing plus app subscriptions have become a meaningful line item. At $2 million revenue, percentage-based costs matter enormously.

The transaction fee thing

Shopify charges an extra 0.5% to 2% if you use a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments. This gets quoted constantly as a reason to avoid Shopify.

It only applies if you cannot use Shopify Payments — which is a real problem in some countries, including Pakistan. Check availability in your market before assuming this cost applies to you.

The honest recommendation

First store, non-technical founder, under $500k revenue: Shopify. The extra monthly cost buys you back time you do not have.

Existing WordPress site, some technical capability, unusual requirements: WooCommerce.

Above $2 million revenue: get an actual analysis done on your specific numbers. At that scale the percentages matter enough to justify modelling it properly.

FAQ

Related questions

Can I migrate from WooCommerce to Shopify later?

Yes — products, customers and orders migrate reasonably cleanly. The hard part is URL structure and SEO redirects. Budget for a proper migration rather than an app doing it automatically.

Which is better for SEO?

Neither, materially. Both let you control titles, meta descriptions, URLs and schema. WooCommerce gives more raw control; Shopify forces a /products/ and /collections/ URL structure. Content and links decide rankings, not the platform.

Is WooCommerce actually free?

The plugin is free. Hosting, a theme, premium extensions and maintenance are not. Budget $700 a year minimum for a store you can rely on.
